The first few verses of John’s second letter raise more questions than they give answers. We assume that “the Elder” is John himself, but who’s the elect lady? Who are her children? Why are some of them not with her? Is the “elect lady” the Church? If so, why is he being so cryptic? – after all, Jesus is mentioned by name several times later in the letter. Does John have a crush on this lady? Is that why he’s planning to “meet face to face, that [their] joy may be full”?
